If Your Mother Knows Knew What You Are Doing …..

I didn’t realise the amount of buzz this spamming IP has generated. By now, more than a dozen of websites and forums have blogged and discussed about similar problems. I’ve noticed a spike in incoming traffic from many whom I assume are curious at the huge amount of spams they received from this specific IP and how it escapes the akismet and spam filter. I have no answer to that.

It’s not unusual to receive spams these days and I have my fair share that I don’t have to deal with; be it wordpress or emails. You see, Akismet is usually very good at filtering spam comments and I only need to clear the spams from the system every few days.

That why when I woke up this morning to half a dozen of comments in moderation queue (yes, I do send new commenters to the moderation), I thought I’ve become a popular girl overnight! Turned out someone in Amsterdam with multiple personality disorder (Sylvia Ramirez, Darell Grimes, Frankie Hutchinson, Tamara Yates, Christie Weiss, Shonda Foley and a so on. You get the gist.) loves me more than you lot.

And then the random letters (i.e. lowfaggggwtqej0a) in comments using random email addresses. The only consistency is the IP address all these comments came from. Apparently, Akismet couldn’t filter it, which led me to suspect that it isn’t a bot’s doing, which led me think that it’s a work of an idiotic individual who has nothing better to do.

Thus, I didn’t bother to open up the comment system when I first wrote this entry, thinking that it is an isolated case. Turns out it isn’t. I received a few emails from people who are having the same problem and wondering how this happened. (Thanks for your emails and tips!)

Then, I noticed some incoming traffics from Mrs. Mecomber of New York Traveler who wrote about it and linked to this post. Reading the comments on her entry, I realised it’s happening all over the joint. Someone really has nothing better to do. A further search with the IP address revealed that this problem is spreading like wildfire. I also noticed a spike in incoming traffic with that IP address as a keyword search.

To those who don’t understand the fuss, it’s okay. It’s almost a geeky issue. If you are one of those having to deal with this and want some solutions to this, I suggest you check out these sites and the comments that entail:

Or ask your hosting company to assist in doing their thingamajic to block it. Mine did. I heart em.

What I don’t get is that there isn’t any website link, so what’s the upside?
Why bother? Why does he do it?

Well, this are questions that will continue to plague anyone who has received spam messages in the past, present and the future. It’s like the annoying uncle that will never go away. Yes. Today is a slow news day. Considered this my blog entry for the week.

PS: I realised the initial blog title was grammatically incorrect. It was early, I was frustrated and dying to rant.

Hello, spammer from this IP 94.102.60.152 who has been sending me half a dozen comments over the last hour. You do know it’s not very difficult to ban your IP and report you, right?
